Poll Workers

BE A POLL VOLUNTEER!

The Portsmouth Canvassing Office is hiring Poll Workers to help during the June 2, 2020 election.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years old (16 year olds can be hired to work as greeters with parental approval)
  • Registered Rhode Island voter
  • Able to write name & read RI State Constitution in English
  • Complete Poll Worker Application
  • Attend online trainings & complete brief quiz

Paid Positions Available - Meals Provided

Greeters (Half-day shifts available) 

  • Welcome voters
  • Shows where sample ballots are posted
  • Directs voters to correct line
  • Reminds voters of ID requirements

Supervisors (Half-day shift available)

  • Work in bi-partisan pairs to oversee ballot applications
  • Verifies voter ID
  • Directs voters to Clerk as needed
  • Distributes ballots & voter instructions

Clerks

  • Responsible for election materials and reports
  • Assists voters who are not listed on voting lists cast their ballot
  • Helps voters update information

Moderators

  • Manage the precinct and reporting results
  • Oversees poll workers
  • Helps voters cast ballots
  • Reports all technical issues
  • Serves as point-of-contact to local Board of Canvassers

New Positions added by State Board of Elections for June 2:

  • Booth monitor - responsible for monitoring condition/cleanliness of poll booths
  • Exterior line control monitor - to greet voters/remind of social distancing
  • Interior line control monitor - monitor social distancing
  • Door monitor - maintain crowd control

Compensation

  • Meals included for all positions.
  • Supervisors and Monitors - $100 per shift 
    • Two shifts available. One person can work both shifts.
      AM Shift: 6AM to 2PM     PM Shift: 1PM to 9PM
  • Moderators and Clerks - $250 full day 
    • One shift available. Must be able to work the full shift. (6AM to 9PM)
